ARRC Joins Dangerous Goods Council

Transport Canada has announced that the Association of Regional Railways of Canada (ARRC) has joined the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) General Policy Advisory Council.

The Advisory Council brings together shippers, carriers, government, emergency response and other public interest stakeholders involved in the handling, offering for transport, and transport of dangerous goods.  The Advisory Council provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information among stakeholders to improve DG transportation, to provide liaison with Transport Canada on legislative and regulatory matters, and to provide information and expert advice to the Minister of Transport and his officials.

ARRC’s participation on the Advisory Council will ensure that ARRC member companies are kept current on TDG Regulations and directives and will allow ARRC members to share their knowledge and experience with other stakeholders.

ARRC will be represented by Gerry Rath, Director of Safety at OmniTRAX Canada, and Bill Danks, Supervisor – Regulatory Compliance & Training, BC Rail, will be the alternate representative.  Both gentlemen have considerable experience in the handling of dangerous goods by rail and look forward to contributing to the activities of the Advisory Council.

ARRC was established in 2001 to provide an independent voice for short line and regional railways in Canada.  ARRC members include BC Rail, The Hudson Bay Railway, The Carlton Trail Railway, and Ferroequus Railway Company Limited.  These companies operate 4,067 route-kilometres of track and in 2000 produced over 5 billion revenue ton-miles and had revenues of approximately $450 million.
